Peking University and Waseda University jointly establish Institute of Sinology

Peking University, September 30, 2024: Jointly established by Peking University (PKU) and Waseda University, the Institute of Sinology at Waseda University was inaugurated on September 21, in combined efforts to promote international Chinese studies.

During a two-day visit to Japan, PKU president Gong Qihuang and his delegation attended the unveiling ceremony held at Waseda University on September 21, 2024. Aiji Tanaka, president of Waseda University, was also present at the ceremony. The institute was officially inaugurated both presidents signed a cooperation agreement, symbolizing their commitment to further academic partnership. 

Chinese studies is an important bridge between Chinese and foreign cultures, Gong Qihuang said. He hopes that the Institute of Sinology at Waseda University will provide a broader platform for Chinese studies within and beyond Asia.

Former Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda and representatives from the Chinese Embassy in Japan sent congratulatory messages for the occasion. The establishment of the new institute is a strong testament to the 42-year-long partnership between both universities.

Earlier that day, Gong Qihuang had attended Waseda University’s freshman induction ceremony, where he was conferred the Honorary Doctorate of Waseda University. Aiji Tanaka, highlighted Gong’s significant contributions to scientific research and higher education. In his remarks, Gong reflected on the enduring exchanges between the two universities and encouraged collaboration among young scholars to create a promising future.

The PKU delegation also visited the University of Tokyo (UTokyo) on September 20, where they were warmly received by president Teruo Fujii, executive vice president Kaori Hayashi, and vice president Yuto Yaguchi. 

Gong Qihuang highlighted the successes of joint initiatives by PKU and UTokyo such as CAMPUS Asia and the East Asian Studies joint training programme. President Fujii emphasized the long-standing efforts both sides have made, through platforms like the Sino-Japanese University Presidents’ Forum. After the meeting, the two presidents renewed the “Peking University-University of Tokyo Academic Exchange Agreement,” reinforcing their commitment to personnel exchanges and research cooperation.

This visit to Japan strengthened the friendship between Peking University and Japan’s top universities, and contributed towards the promotion of international Chinese studies, encouraging further academic cooperation.
