Peking University, May 29, 2025: Researchers from PKU Third Hospital took center stage at the American Thoracic Society (ATS) 2025 International Conference—running from May 16 – 21—with three research results qualified for presentation and winning two prestigious awards.
Chen Dian won the ATS International Travel Award (ATS-ISRD)
Present at the conference was Professor Chen Yahong’s research team from the Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine (RCCM), PKU Third Hospital. Chen Dian, a PhD researcher on the team, reported basic research on the role of lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) in promoting lung tissue repair. LNPs are very small (with an average diameter between 10 and 1000 nanometers) spherical particles composed of fatty or waxy chemical compounds.
Chen’s research innovatively employed LNPs as drug delivery vehicles and proved their efficacy in aiding protein restoration in animals’ lung tissues. Providing a basis for non-surgery therapy for treating lung disease, this research won the Respiratory Structure & Function (RSF) Assembly Recognition Award. Chen Dian himself won the ATS International Travel Award (ATS-ISRD).
On the sidelines, Chen Yahong participated in a seminar aimed at improving young doctors’ clinical research capabilities, in her capacity as the ATS-MECOR Course Director. ATS launched Methods in Epidemiologic, Clinical and Operations Research (MECOR) as an initiative dedicated to advancing research skills in pulmonary, critical care, and sleep medicine globally.

Staying focused on clinical needs, RCCM will continue to deepen cooperation with international organizations including ATS, contributing to global research on treatment and prevention of respiratory diseases.
This recognition from the world-leading academic conference in pulmonary disease, critical illness, and sleep disorders showcased the university’s prowess in the field of respiratory disease.
