Argentinian scholar visits PKU Third Hospital to deepen cooperation on pancreas research

Peking University, June,11, 2025: Associate Professor Santiago from the Department of Genetics at the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina, visited the Peking University Third Hospital (PKUTH) from May 21 to June 3, in an effort to deepen cooperation in pancreatic development and regeneration for potential new treatment of diabetes. 

At the welcome ceremony held by the Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism of PKUTH, Santiago was introduced to the hospital’s development, academic achievements, and research platforms. He then toured the PKU Health Science Center campus and relevant wards at PKUTH, learning about latest clinical trials and the hospital’s hi-tech attempt at managing blood glucose. 



During his visit, Santiago delivered two academic lectures, presenting his team’s research on islet beta-cell cell development and regeneration, as well as new findings on glucocorticoid receptor’s role in pancreatic progenitor cell differentiation. He also engaged in in-depth discussions with his Chinese counterparts on control mechanisms for pancreatic development, the impact of medication on pancreatic islets during pregnancy, etc.



At the end of the visit, PKUTH hosted a send-off ceremony for Santiago, in which Hong Tianpei, Chief Physician of the Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism, presented Santiago a Visiting Certificate, celebrating the completion of this academic exchange activity.

During his two-week visit at PKUTH, Santiago had insightful discussions with PKU physicians on islet beta-cell research, reaching an agreement to further cooperation for more research breakthroughs.
