Peking University, Dec. 10, 2012: “Laihua Cup” Swimming Competition for Overseas Students took place in Beijing Foreign Studies University on Dec. 2, 2012. More than 200 contestants from over 30 universities participated in the game. Contestants from Peking University (PKU) won three champions, three runners-up, and one second runner-up in all the six events. This put PKU on the top of the gold-medal table as well as the medal table.
The game was divided by a lunch break into two halves. The morning session covered men’s and women’s 100-meter freestyle and breaststroke, while the afternoon session was comprised of men’s and women’s 4*100-meter freestyle relay.
Phoebe Alice Miley Dyer from Australia kicked off a good start for PKU, leading her group with a solid 1 minute 12 seconds in the women’s 100-meter freestyle swimming. Later in the game, Reagan Thompson from the US surpassed Miley Dyer by 1 second. As a result, PKU secured both the first and second places in this event. In the ensuing women’s 100m breaststroke, Thompson and Miley Dyer kept their magic alive and again won the first and second places with large margins. Up to that point, PKU had proven the biggest winner in all women’s individual events by taking all the first and second places.
The competition of men’s individual was even fiercer. In men’s 100m freestyle, TJUT Michael from Indonesia lost medals with a margin of a bare 0.7second, while Australian student Zou Shu Cheng ranked 6th. Later in men’s 100m breaststroke, they moved up to the third and fourth places.
PKU women’s team carried on performing well in team events in the afternoon. They defeated their counterpart from Tsinghua University by one minute and won the gold medal. Meanwhile, men’s team ranked 2nd owing to their sufficient preparation and excellent performance.
