Peking University, October 22, 2021: The 2021 Peking University Emerging Engineering International Forum
will be held from October 22 to 24 this year. "Emerging Engineering and
Development at PKU" is a new sector that is still growing, and is
relatively different to the traditional engineering majors that we are
more familiar with. Read on to find out more about what is emerging
engineering, and its many developments here at Peking University.
What is Emerging Engineering?
Emerging
engineeringmainly refers to engineering developments in emerging
industries such as bigdata, cloud computing, artificial intelligence,
and more, with the internet andindustrial intelligence acting as the
core. It can be said to be an integrationof two areas - the first being
an improvement in traditional engineeringtechnologies, such as
information technology and a multi-disciplinary crossintegration; the
second being the developing the engineering sector foremerging
industries and future technologies.
The Emerging Engineering and Development faculty here at Peking
University is built by the integration of multi-disciplines. It is lead
not only by the sciences, but also by the humanities, and consists of a
multi-discipline approach that helps to cultivate outstanding talents,
lead innovation processes, and help serve various national strategies.
Development History
The
engineering discipline at Peking University has had a long history of
more than 110 years. It has achieved a series of leading domestic and
internationally influential major research results and created many
"firsts" in the country.
Peking University Red Building
Peking University College of Engineering began operations here during 1946.
Peking University's predecessor, Imperial University of Peking,
established the engineering branch, which was the first in China in
1910. In 1952, with the adjustment of faculties and departments
nationwide, the main engineering department moved to Tsinghua
University, creating China's first mechanics discipline. After 1958,
multiple first-level engineering disciplines such as electronic science
and technology, computer science and technology, information and
communication engineering, environmental science and engineering,
software engineering, nuclear science and technology, biomedical
engineering etc. were successively established.

In
1979, PKU professor Wang Xuan compressed thousands of gigabytes of
Chinese character font information and store it in a computer with only a
few megabytes of memory. This was the first time in the world that
precise Chinese characters were stored in a computer.
There are currently 13 colleges/institutes/centers at the Emerging
Engineering and Development faculty, including 11 first-level
disciplines. With 656 teaching and research personnel, including 19
academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 254 outstanding young
and middle-aged academic leaders are national distinguished experts and
winners of the National Outstanding Youth Fund.

Internationally, Peking University is ranked 22nd in engineering science
and technology in the QS World Subject Ranking, among which 4
engineering science courses are ranked 16 to 27.
