Team from College of Engineering wins gold medal at the International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva

Peking University, April 18, 2022: On March 28, 2022, the International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva announced its award results. The project of Professor Song Jie, Assistant Professor He Guannan, Ph.D. student Jin Ruiyang, and undergraduate student Zhang Yuheng from PKU College of Engineering won a gold medal. Founded in 1973, the International Exhibition of Inventions has been successfully held for 48 sessions and is renowned for its long history and large scale.
The award-winning project aims to provide technologies and strategies for the decentralized control of distributed generation and energy storage in the face of massive heterogeneous data. Energy storage technology is widely regarded as an essential means to achieve the future large-scale integration of renewable energies into the grid. Based on electric power big data and IoT technology, the team of Song Jie has proposed an innovative hierarchical control strategy to enable distributed energy storage to participate in the power grid frequency regulation. Their project has also invented the hierarchical edge intelligence control technology of microgrids driven by optical energy storage, adapting to the need to handle big data.
The innovative technologies proposed by the team have already been applied to various provinces in China and have also been tested in regions of the U.S. and Australia. Their project can effectively reduce carbon emissions and improve the security, stability, reliability, and economy of the grid and microgrid systems.
The research results of the award-winning team have obtained 4 Chinese patents, 1 U.S. patent, and 1 software copyright. More than 30 papers have been published in high-level international journals such as Nature Energy, Nature Communications, IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid, and IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management.
