Peking University, April 22, 2022: A commendation ceremony for volunteers of the Beijing Winter Olympics and Paralympics was held on 14 April. The ceremony took place at the Khoo Teck Puat Gymnasium of Peking University (PKU), which was the ping pong competition venue for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

To begin the ceremony, a video documenting the PKU volunteers’ work at the Olympics was played, followed by singing of the national anthem. PKU Council Chair Qiu Shuiping and PKU President Hao Ping then gave their speeches, in which they congratulated and commended all the volunteers for their stellar performance and all-out effort during the Games. Recognising their outstanding contribution, select groups and individuals were awarded, and every volunteer received a snowflake-shaped medal.

Award recipients and distinguished guests of the ceremony

PKU has dispatched a total of 630 volunteers, 57 interns, 15 opening ceremony performers and 900 medical officers to the Winter Olympics and Paralympics. Owing to their professional attitude and hard work, they received letters of appreciation and awards from various institutions during the course of the games, making PKU to amass the most commendation awards among universities.

Representatives from different task teams and competition venues—teachers, students, security and F&B workers alike—then took to the stage to share behind-the-scenes stories and highlights of their experience at the Games. After the sharing, the PKU Faculty Choir, PKU Students Choir and children from PKU’s affiliated preschools performed “Snowflake”, the Winter Olympics opening ceremony theme song.

They will spread and carry forward the Olympic spirit by telling their stories at the Games.
