PKU Participates in the 2022 International Alliance of Research Universities Presidents' Meetings

Peking University, June 7, 2022: The 2022 International Alliance of Research Universities (IARU) Presidents’ Meeting was in a hybrid format from May 24 to 25. PKU President Hao Ping and Vice President Wang Bo attended the annual meeting online in Conference Room 2 of Yingjie Exchange Center.

In his speech, Hao Ping introduced the recent innovative initiatives of Peking University. He said that Peking University and IARU uphold the same principle, pay high attention to new trends and challenges of global development, and actively respond to them through reforms and innovations. Hao Ping highlighted PKU’s breakthroughs in the fields of digital humanities, redesigning of engineering curriculum, “Double Carbon” research, and artificial intelligence.

Stephen J. Toope, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cambridge, Louise Richardson, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Oxford, Brian P. Schmidt, Vice-Chancellor of the Australian National University, Tan Eng Chye, President of the National University of Singapore, Mamokgethi Phakeng, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Town, Henrik C. Wegener, Rector of the University of Copenhagen, Fujii Teruo, President of the University of Tokyo, Detlef Günther, Vice President of ETH Zürich, and Don Filer, Associate Vice President of Yale University presented the innovative initiatives of their universities in the past year.

The participating presidents listened to the secretariat's report on IARU's activities in 2021-2022 and the financial report, before having discussions about the membership system, electing the next president, and the arrangements for the 2023 presidents' meeting.

The International Alliance of Research Universities (IARU), established in 2006, is a network of eleven international research-intensive universities from nine countries across the globe. The IARU Members are the Australian National University, ETH Zurich, National University of Singapore, Peking University, University of California, Berkeley, University of Cambridge, University of Cape Town, University of Copenhagen, University of Oxford, the University of Tokyo, and Yale University.

Since joining the Alliance as a founding member in 2006, Peking University has been actively involved in student exchanges, summer programs, population aging, gender studies, alumni networks, innovation and entrepreneurship activities. In 2021, Peking University launched the "IARU University Museums Online Exhibition" initiative, inviting alliance university museums to participate in the exhibition and hold lectures. In 2021, PKU launched the Virtual Museum Tours initiative, inviting IARU members to share their museums’ collections through online virtual tours of exhibits and lectures. Through this initiative, IARU members can present the beauty of museums from a multicultural and multidisciplinary perspective.
