Oct 28, 2022

Peking University, October 28, 2022: Peking University Health Science Center (PKUHSC), one of China’s leading medical institutions, celebrated its 110th anniversary on October 26, 2022. PKUHSC held a series of events to commemorate its 110 years of extraordinary achievements.

110 years ago, the National Peking Medical School, the predecessor of Peking University Health Science Center (PKUHSC), was born. It was the first national medical school founded by the Chinese central government. From a small-scale school with just 9 faculty members and 72 students to a medical school with nearly 10,000 students and 5,000 faculty members, PKU Health Science Center has grown into a prominent medical institution that is catching up with world-class universities around the globe.

In the past 110 years, PKUHSC has withstood the test of time and witnessed the strong development of medical education in China. PKU Health Science Center has trained a large number of scientific experts and great doctors of the country, notable alumni including Tu Youyou, Zhong Nanshan, Wang Zhongcheng, Hu Yamei, and Gu Fangzhou. They have made outstanding contributions to China’s development of medicine and health sciences. Inspired by their predecessors, younger generations of PKUHSC have defended people's health with their expertise and climbed scientific peaks in their careers.

Advent: The duty to develop China’s medical industry

One of the characteristics of PKUHSC is its social commitment.

“In the spirit of PKU Health Science Center lies loyalty and honesty, the will to seek truth from facts. This, when applying to the academic field, builds the stable foundation for medical education,” said Zhong Nanshan, Alumni of PKUHSC and the recipient of the Medal of the Republic, the highest honor of China.

During this period, the people of PKUHSC had adhered to their vital educational duties in medicine, persevered through difficulties, and promoted health care for the Chinese people.

Growth: All as one, sharing the same destiny with the New China

After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, PKUHSC entered its phase of rapid development. It was relocated to the new campus on 38 College Road, Haidian District of Beijing. As its faculties and academic systems got restructured, the scale of enrollment gradually expanded, and new medical achievements were eventually developed, all of which were based on the solid foundation built by the predecessors.

“One of the great traditions of PKUHSC is that it has a solid foundation in medical education, which is often combined with the experience of its predecessors. So, when you face problems, you can use the foundation you’ve gained and apply it with the most updated medical technologies,” said Zhang Lihe, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and professor of the PKU School of Pharmaceutical Sciences.

Development: Opening a new chapter in the new millennium

With the new millennium approaching, Beijing Medical University integrated with Peking University and was renamed Peking University Health Sciences Center. With it, the new PKUHSC transformed into an institution where health sciences engaged closely with disciplines in engineering, natural sciences, and liberal arts. This was set off to create a brand new page in medical studies in China, signaling a new chapter of creating a multi-disciplinary field filled with innovation and technological advancements.
