Three PKU professors elected as new TWAS Fellows

Peking University, November 29, 2022: On November 21st, TWAS (The World Academy of Sciences for the advancement of science in developing countries) elected 50 new Fellows during its General Meeting, among which were Piao Shilong and Qiao Jie, two Peking University Boya Chair Professors, and Zhang Yue, visiting professor at Peking University. So far, Peking University currently has 38 Fellows of TWAS, demonstrating a good trend of talent development.

Professor Piao Shilong

Professor Piao Shilong works as a full-time professor at PKU’s College of Urban and Environmental Sciences, focusing on the mutual feedback between terrestrial ecosystems and climate change in the field of physical geography. He has also made systematic innovations in the functions of carbon sink in China’s terrestrial ecosystems. Professor Piao Shilong conducted research projects in Laboratoire des Sciences du Climat et de I’Environnement (Fracne), and won the 2016 TWAS Awards in Earth, Astronomy and Space Sciences.

Professor Qiao Jie

Professor Qiao Jie is the executive vice president of Peking University and president of Peking University Health Science Center. She majors in the basic and clinical research of obstetrics, gynecology, and reproductive health. Conducting in-depth investigations on the mechanism of early embryonic development, she has invented new techniques for embryonic genetic diagnosis which improves female fertility and prevents hereditary birth diseases. Professor Qiao Jie was also elected as a Foreign Honorary Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2020 and an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists in 2021.

Professor Zhang Yue

Professor Zhang Yue is the dean of the Advanced Research Institute of Multidisciplinary Sciences at the University of Science and Technology Beijing. He has been employed as a visiting chair professor of PKU’s School of Materials Science and Engineering since January 2022. He is mainly engaged in the research of low-dimensional semiconductor materials and their performance in service.
