Peking University, November 7, 2023: The Humboldt Foundation in Germany has recently announced the winners of the 2023 Humboldt Research Award. Duan Huiling, dean of Peking University's College of Engineering, is among the recipients of the award for her contributions to the fields of interface mechanics and the mechanics of deformable solids.

Duan is known for her long-term research in areas such as continuum mechanics, multiscale-multi-physics modeling, and the experimental characterization of the thermos-mechanical and physical properties of the heterogeneous media with various microstructures under external stimuli. She is the author of more than 230 publications in international peer-reviewed journals and has made significant contributions to the formation of new theories and methodologies. Duan has won various awards including the State Natural Science Award (Second Class Prize) in 2020 and the China Youth Science and Technology Award in 2016. She was also recognized as an American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Fellow in 2020.

The Humboldt Research Award was established in 1972 by the Alexander Humboldt Foundation. This award sought to recognize globally renowned scientists and scholars who work outside Germany. Each year, the award is awarded to no more than 100 winners worldwide of all disciplines for their stellar research record. The award winners will be invited to execute a research project of their choice in Germany and work with experts at a German research institution.
