Peking University, April 22, 2024: Since 1970, April 22 has been recognized as "Earth Day" in various countries, but "Mother Earth Day" wasn't officially acknowledged by the UN until 2009. International Mother Earth Day, observed annually on April 22, aims to raise awareness of the Earth, its people, and their interdependence.

This worldwide event advocates for environmental preservation and sustainability. Since its inception, millions worldwide have participated in Earth Day events, including tree planting, community clean-ups, recycling campaigns, and educational programs. The day highlights the importance of protecting the environment, combating climate change, and promoting a sustainable way of life for future generations.

What we can do for Mother Earth:

Humans play a crucial role in maintaining the planet's sustainability. It is essential to use natural resources such as water, air, forests, and minerals sustainably and ethically, which involves reducing waste, saving energy, and adopting eco-friendly habits. Protecting the planet's ecosystems -- wetlands, oceans, forests, and wildlife habitats -- is also crucial. This can be achieved by promoting biodiversity, preventing pollution, and supporting conservation efforts.

Human activities such as deforestation and burning fossil fuels contribute to climate change. Communities and individuals can mitigate these effects by transitioning to renewable energy sources, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and supporting relevant laws and programs. Living sustainably involves minimizing one's environmental impact through actions like reducing consumption, recycling and reusing materials, buying local and organic products, and choosing eco-friendly transportation options. Additionally, advocating for sustainable policies and practices and raising awareness of environmental issues are important steps.

As the only species responsible for protecting the Earth's natural resources, biodiversity, and beauty, we must ensure a healthy planet for current and future generations. Implementing sustainable practices and addressing environmental issues proactively can help achieve this goal.

China's Significant Role in Sustainability:

Over the years, China has played a significant role in global sustainability with its initiatives on environmental issues. Here are some of the key aspects of China's role:

Climate Change Mitigation: China, as the world's largest greenhouse gas emitter, aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060 and peak carbon emissions by 2030. Transitioning to renewable energy sources like hydropower, solar power, and wind power is part of this effort.

Renewable Energy Leadership: China leads globally in solar and wind energy. Its investments in renewable energy research and infrastructure support the global shift away from fossil fuels.

Environmental Protection: China faces environmental challenges such as deforestation, habitat destruction, and pollution. Protecting ecosystems and biodiversity requires tighter environmental laws, pollution prevention strategies, and reforestation campaigns.

Global Supply Chains: China's role as a manufacturing hub affects global supply chains. Promoting sustainable production methods, waste reduction, and resource efficiency in Chinese industries, which the nation strives to do, will significantly impact global sustainability.

Green Technology Innovation: China contributes to global innovation in sustainability through investments in green technologies like energy storage, carbon capture, and electric vehicles.

International Cooperation: China's participation in international agreements like the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Agreement is crucial for global sustainability. Diplomatic efforts and partnerships facilitate environmental policies and cooperation worldwide.

China's policies and actions have a profound impact on Earth's sustainability. By addressing environmental issues, investing in renewable energy, promoting sustainable development, and engaging in international cooperation, China can contribute to a more resilient and sustainable future for all.
