Peking University’s Kunqu Opera shines at Weibo performance stage

Peking University, November 26 2024: On November 13, 2024, the highly anticipated "2024 Weibo Heritage Renewal - Night of Tianfu" event took place in Chengdu. Peking University's Kunqu Opera, the sole representative from higher education institutions at the event, delivered a stunning performance of “The Peony Pavilion”.

With over 30.82 million views on Weibo’s live broadcast platform, the event’s hashtags garnered real-time views exceeding 45 million, with total views surpassing 100 million and discussions exceeding 546,000.

This opening performance was planned by Director of the Peking University Kunqu Opera Inheritance and Research Center, Associate Professor Chen Jun. Featuring Peking University’s Professor Du Hong and Dr. Xu Kun, they delivered a stunning rendition of The Peony Pavilion: The Garden Stroll, highlighting the vitality and innovation of this traditional art in the modern era. Their performance underscored the university's leadership in preserving and re-imagining cultural heritage for younger generations.

Established in 2013, Peking University’s Kunqu Opera Inheritance and Research Center has played a pivotal role in promoting of Kunqu Opera promotion through education, performance, and research. Recognized as a Ministry of Education Inheritance Base in 2018, it has enriched campus life with initiatives like "Classic Kunqu Opera Appreciation" a classic favourite course for 15 years. 
Cultural figures such as Li Ziqi, Ding Zhen, and Jike Junyi, alongside prominent bloggers, brought vibrant energy to the evening, seamlessly blending tradition with modernity. Kunqu Opera as one of the first recognized intangible cultural heritage projects, took center stage with a captivating opening. The performance from Peking University underscores the dedication to preserving and innovating Kunqu Opera for future generations, with plans to further engage academia and the public in showcasing this timeless art form.
