Peking University, December 20, 2024: On December 12, 2024, the academic symposium on the 30th anniversary of the College of Chemistry and Molecular Engineering (CCME) and the 114th anniversary of the chemistry discipline was held in the CCME Shao Lun Lecture Hall. 

Academician Bai Chunli, Honorary Chairman of the Academic Divisions of the Chinese Academy of Sciences; Hao Ping, PKU Council Chairman; Zhang Jin, PKU Vice President, joined by over fifty academicians and numerous representatives from various institutions, along faculty members and students to attend this meaningful symposium, moreover, a reunion day.

During his opening speech, Academician Bai encouraged chemistry professionals to leverage the discipline as a critical variable that shapes and transforms the global economic landscape. Bai expressed confidence that, with the joint efforts of faculty, students, and alumni, CCME will continue to lead in chemical science research and contribute to China's transition to a global powerhouse in the field.


James Milne, President of the Publications Department of the American Chemical Society (ACS), discussed the in-depth cooperation between ACS and CCME in his speech, expressing high appreciation for CCME’s extraordinary contributions.


The symposium centered on two themes. The Forum on Chemistry Discipline Development and Industry focused on topics such as the integration of artificial intelligence into chemistry and clinical chemical biology. The Forum on University Chemistry Education and Teaching brought together numerous experts to discuss the future opportunities and challenges in chemistry education.

The history of the PKU Chemistry Discipline dates back to 1910 when the Chemistry Division of the Imperial University of Peking was founded. It was reorganized into the Department of Chemistry of Peking University in 1919 and was renamed as the College of Chemistry and Molecular Engineering in 1994. 

Since its establishment, the College has been committed to leading the frontier of the chemistry discipline. It adheres to the equal importance of teaching and scientific research, actively serving the country’s needs and economic development. Through the unremitting efforts of several generations of PKU chemists, CCME has become a chemistry education and research institution with significant influence and continues to strive towards becoming a top-tier international institution.
