PKU Professor Elected International Academy of Astronautics Academician

Peking University, October 13, 2025: Han Hongbin, Dean of Institute of Medical Technology, PKU Health Science Center, was elected Academician (Life Sciences) of the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA). Together with other five newly elected Chinese academicians, he received his title from Dr. Jean Michel Contant, the IAA Secretary General, as the organization observed its Academician Day on September 23 in Shanghai. Han was the only Chinese scholar to be elected into the Life Sciences section this year.



Han Hongbin has dedicated his career to advancing medical imaging technologies for the diagnosis and treatment of brain diseases. He is internationally recognized as a leading expert in the field of brain extracellular space according to global academic citation impact. In the past three years, his research has been focused on disruptions to brain function caused by simulated microgravity, with results published in multiple academic journals such as npj Mricogravity, Acta Astronautica, etc.

The IAA was founded in 1960 at the initiative of world-renowned scientist and aerodynamicist von Kármán. Headquartered in Paris, France, the IAA comprises four academic sections: Basic Sciences, Engineering Sciences, Life Sciences, and Social Sciences. The IAA holds annual elections for new members. As of this round of elections, the IAA boasts 1,240 members from over 90 countries worldwide, with mainland China comprising 145, ranking third globally.
