Peking University, July 15, 2015: On June 17, professor Zhao Zhenjiang from the School of Foreign Languages was awarded the Civil Order of Alfonso X the Wise (Spanish: The Orden Civil de Alfonso X el Sabio) by Mr. Manuel Valencia, Spanish Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, on behalf of King Felipe VI, incumbent sovereign of Spain.
Alfonso X, byname Alfonso the Wise (Spanish: el Sabio), was one of the most significant leaders in Spanish history. The Civil Order of Alfonso X the Wise is a Spanish civil order granted with the aim to reward relevant merits in the fields of education, science, culture, higher education and research. The other recipient, professor Dong Yansheng, comes from Beijing Foreign Studies University. Precedent Chinese recipient, Yang Jiang, prestigious Chinese playwright, author and translator, received the award in 1986.
Apart from the Civil Order of Alfonso X the Wise, professor Zhao also receivedthe Order of May granted to Knights awarded by Argentina in 1999 and thePablo Neruda Medal of Honour from the Chilean government in 2004.
