Peking University April 21, 2016: On April 20, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences announced the election of 213 new members. Two PKU professors, Yu Kongjian, from College of Architecture and Landscape Architecture, and Li Ling, from Department of Chinese Language and Literature, were among the list of Foreign Honorary Members.
Professor Yu Kongjian
Yu Kongjian received his Doctor of Design Degree at The Harvard Graduate School of Design in 1995. He has been a professor of urban and regional planning at Peking University since 1997, is the founder and Dean of the School of Landscape Architecture at PKU, and is now the College of Architecture and Landscape Architecture. He founded Turenscape in 1998, an internationally awarded firm with about 600 professionals. Yu and Turenscape's practice covers architecture, landscape architecture, and urban design, across scales.
Yu's projects received both 2009 and 2010 World Architectural Festival Awards of Landscape, the 2009 ULI Global Award for Excellence, the 2010 ASLA award of Excellence, and 7 ASLA Honor Awards (American Society of Landscape Architects), 4 Excellence on the Waterfront Awards, the 2004 National Gold Medal of Fine Arts of China. Yu publishes widely; his publications include The Beautiful Big Foot, Landscape as Ecological Infrastructure and The Art of Survival. Through his works, Yu tries to reconstruct ecological infrastructure across scales and to define a new aesthetics based on environmental ethic.
Professor Li Ling
Graduated with a master’s degree in History from Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Li Ling started teaching in Department of Chinese Language and Literature at PKU in 1985.
Li's studies cover a wide range of academic field. His research concentrates on archeology, paleography and ancient bibliography. As one of the most distinguished scholars who achieve mastery of these three inextricably linked subjects, he has conducted thorough research on ancient Chinese history, thinking and culture. His major academic works include: Research on the Ancient Manuscript of The Art of War, Research on China Fang Shu, Research on Guodian Chu Slips, etc. With intensive materials, subtle investigations and rich thinking, those works have received recognition and acclaim worldwide.
Besides, Li dedicates himself in the promotion of classical Chinese culture. His comments on Confucian Analects and other classics have created profound impact on the academic field.
