Peking University, November 23, 2023: China's top academic institutions, the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), announced on Nov. 22 that 133 scientists have been elected as new academicians, the highest academic honorary title in the country's sci-tech fields, according to Xinhua News Agency.

Four professors at Peking University (PKU) are among the newly elected academicians. Duan Huiling, dean of Peking University's College of Engineering, and Zhang Zemin, a professor at PKU's School of Life Sciences, have been elected as members of the CAS, while Zhang Qiang, a professor at the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, PKU, and Huang Xiaojun, a professor at Peking University People's Hospital, have been appointed as academicians of the CAE.

The Chinese Academy of Sciences elected 59 new academicians, and the Chinese Academy of Engineering elected 74 in 2023.

The latest academician selection tilts toward researchers who work in primary scientific areas and basic disciplines, emerging disciplines, and interdisciplinary fields urgently needed by the country.

Scientists who have made outstanding contributions to national defense and security and undertaken major national research tasks and sci-tech infrastructure construction projects are also preferred.

The number of CAS and CAE academicians reached 873 and 978, respectively, after the election.
