Peking University, July 31, 2023: In a dazzling display of talent and teamwork, Peking University's athletes took center stage at the 31st World University Summer Games on the evening of July 28, 2023, creating unforgettable moments during the spectacular opening ceremony in Chengdu, Sichuan.
The crowd went wild as two remarkable torchbearers, Ding Ning and Lang Zheng, set the stadium ablaze with their infectious energy and passion for sports. Ding Ning, a world table tennis champion, and recent graduate of Peking University, beamed with pride as she represented her alma mater in the prestigious event. Meanwhile, Lang Zheng, fondly known as the "Salute Boy," scored a double win as he recently received his acceptance letter from Peking University and got the chance to light up the Games.

Held from July 28 to August 8 2023, the Chengdu Universiade is the first international multi-sport Games being held in China after the COVID-19 pandemic. The opening ceremony was a masterpiece of creativity, weaving together artistic brilliance with heart-pumping moments that had everyone on their feet. As the torchbearers united to kindle the symbolic flame, the spirit of unity and fierce competition ignited the stadium. The opening ceremony was also witnessed by foreign dignitaries including President Joko Widodo of Indonesia, President Mohamed Ould Cheikh Ghazouani of Mauritania, President Evariste Ndayishimiye of Burundi, President Irfaan Ali of Guyana and Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili of Georgia.

Peking University's athletic prowess extends beyond contributing to the ceremonial duties. A stellar lineup of eleven students, a mix of rising stars and seasoned athletes, has been donning the Chinese colors across various sports. From men's long jump to women's javelin throw and men's basketball, these talented athletes are geared up to make their mark and show the world what Peking University is all about.

But the University's support doesn't stop there. The Department of Physical Education sent out a rockstar team of coaches, referees, and delegation staff, totaling nearly ten sports enthusiasts, to ensure the success of the Games. Their commitment speaks volumes about the university's dedication to making the event a smashing hit.
